Four Corners Road Trip '06
8-4-06 Packing up--and tomorrow we'll be on our way! Sean and I are both jazzed about our trip. In Sean's case, the thrill is as much from the prospect of camping as the places we'll see. As for me, I've wanted to take a trip like this with one of my kids since they were tiny--1993, to be exact. That year, I visited Glacier National Park. The kids were 1 and 4, and not really up to a full-fledged day hike, so I left them at the campsite and went hiking on my own. On the way, I passed a father-and-son backpacking team, and thought that someday, that would be me. Thirteen years later, it finally is. We'll be seeing Zion, the Grand Canyon, and Arches, as well as other places in the neighborhood, after which I'll drop Sean off in Idaho Falls and head back to Oregon, about 3000 miles in all. Here's the itinerary:August 5 Portland - Battle Mountain, Nevada, passing through Bend, Burns, and Winnemucca; staying at the Battle Mountain Inn (775-635-5200); 566 miles.
